Tip #5: Create Consistency Amid Change Create anchor moments.

Bridge Leader Tip #5 Create Consistency Amid Change.  Creating anchor moments with your team is like a lighthouse guiding a ship’s crew—offering clarity, direction, and stability, ensuring everyone stays on course and navigates challenges with confidence.

Bridge Leaders establish consistent routines, communication schedules, and check-ins with their teams to create predictability in an unpredictable environment.  Simple practices, like starting meetings with a set agenda or maintaining regular one-on-one conversations, help anchor your team and build trust. When people know what to expect, they feel more secure and better equipped to focus on problem-solving, even in the face of uncertainty.

For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Best Buy prioritized employee well-being by clearly communicating policies that encouraged sick employees to stay home with pay, ensuring both safety and clarity during uncertain times ( April, 2020 McKinsey & Company).

On the other hand, when regular communication is lacking during uncertainty, the impact can be severe. Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, some companies faced backlash for unclear safety measures and work expectations, leaving employees feeling confused and unsupported, leading to dissatisfaction, protests, and higher turnover (CBS Mornings, May 13, 2020).

Think about what goes through your mind when you’re expecting dinner to be ready at a certain time, and it’s not—or when someone’s supposed to show up for a meeting, and they’re late. That little moment of confusion or frustration? Multiply that across a team during uncertain times, and it’s easy to see how quickly things can spiral without consistency!

  • Reflection Question:
How can you purposefully design routines or rituals that not only bring stability but also encourage creativity and connection during times of uncertainty?
  • Action Step:
Introduce a fun and creative anchor moment to your team’s routine. For example, start meetings with a “Minute of Magic,” where someone shares an inspiring story, idea, or quick tip they’ve learned recently. This small, consistent ritual adds stability while sparking creativity and connection.

As we conclude this series, it’s clear that Bridge Leadership is not just a skillset but a mindset. The ability to foster connection, embrace diverse perspectives, and create stability in times of change is what sets great leaders apart. Each tip—from prioritizing self-care to creating consistency—is a building block for stronger, more resilient teams.

Bridge Leaders understand that connection is the foundation of effective leadership. They listen actively, engage authentically, and guide their teams through challenges with empathy and purpose. These skills aren’t just helpful during times of uncertainty; they’re essential for long-term success and collaboration.

  • Reflection Question:
If your leadership bridge were a work of art, what would it look like right now? Would it be a sturdy masterpiece, a work-in-progress with scaffolding, or a quirky suspension bridge still finding its balance? What’s one creative step you can take today to strengthen its structure and deepen your connections with your team?
  • Action Step:
Pick one tip from this series and turn it into a creative challenge for the next month. Maybe you start a “Question of the Week” to spark better conversations, design a self-care ritual that fuels both your mind and creativity, or introduce a fun anchor moment in your meetings (think: team haikus, weekly “aha!” moments, or a rotating “What Inspired You?” share). Whatever you choose, make it measurable, engaging, and uniquely yours. For accountability, invite a colleague or mentor to join the challenge and share your progress!
