Bridge Leader Tip #3: Give People Space to Share. By creating safe environments for authentic communication, you’re building your ability to not only connect but can also hold strong during times of bad weather—when challenges and uncertainty threaten to shake your team. Let’s dive into how to create a safe, supportive structure for your team to lean on!

Sadly, a SHRM study revealed that 37% of employees hesitate to speak openly with their managers about personal challenges (SHRM State of the Workplace Report, March 2023). This hesitation becomes even more pronounced during times of uncertainty, when fear and anxiety are heightened. Without open communication, unresolved issues can escalate, leading to decreased productivity, a breakdown in trust, and a strained workplace culture. In these moments, the risk of burnout, disengagement, and turnover increases significantly, leaving organizations struggling to retain talent and maintain stability when they need it most.

As a Bridge Leader, you can counter this trend by creating informal moments where you engage people. Some of the best conversations I’ve had at work started with a simple, “How was your weekend?” Casual chats can reveal a lot about what’s really going on. You don’t have to probe, just offer yourself as someone interested in getting to know them better. Take note of hobbies they mention or the names of their children or pets. Linger a bit longer on your next virtual meeting or come a few minutes early to chat before the official meeting kicks off. These small moments build trust and open doors to deeper understanding.

  • Reflection Question:
How can you creatively design opportunities for your team to connect with you and each other in meaningful, unconventional ways?
  • Action Step:
Try hosting a “Show and Share” moment in your next meeting where team members bring something small (a photo, hobby, or insight) to share about themselves. This fresh approach can help build trust and give everyone the space to open up.
